Reducing RDP latency over long distances
Pick the right region first, then tune the protocol. In that order.
No amount of protocol tuning beats physics. If your server is 8,000km away, every keystroke carries that round trip.
Choose the region first
Pick the location closest to where you actually sit, not the cheapest one on the list.
Then tune the display
- Drop the colour depth to 16-bit for text work.
- Disable desktop composition and font smoothing.
- Turn off wallpaper and window animation.
Find the real bottleneck
Run a continuous trace to the server for a few minutes. A single hop with packet loss explains more stutter than any setting in the client.
