Cannot connect to your RDP server

Work through these five checks in order — one of them is almost always the cause.

A connection that used to work and now refuses almost always fails for one of five reasons. Check them in this order — it is roughly the order of how often each one turns out to be the culprit.

1. Is the server running?

Open the server's management page in your panel. If the status pill says Offline, start it and wait about sixty seconds before trying again.

2. Are you using the right address and port?

Use the primary IP shown on the management page. If you changed the RDP port, you must append it: 203.0.113.10:3390.

3. Has the password changed?

A reset issued from the panel takes effect immediately. Copy it again from the credentials panel rather than typing from memory.

4. Is a firewall rule blocking you?

If you restricted RDP to a single address and your home IP has changed since, you are now locked out. Use the console from the panel to widen the rule.

5. Is the service listening?

Open the console and run:

netstat -ano | findstr :3389

No output means Remote Desktop is not running. Re-enable it under System Properties → Remote.
