Connecting to a Linux server over SSH
Your first login, and how to add a key so it is your last password.
Linux servers are delivered with password authentication enabled for the root user.
First login
ssh [email protected]
Take the password from the credentials panel on the server's management page.
Swap to a key
From your own machine:
ssh-copy-id [email protected]
Confirm the key works, then disable password logins in /etc/ssh/sshd_config and reload the service.
"Permission denied"
Nearly always a wrong password, a key that was never copied, or root logins disabled after hardening. The panel console gets you in regardless of SSH configuration.
